Racking my head for other nonprofits to write about that have affected my life I thought of youth organizations. When I was involved with them, I did not really take into account that they were a nonprofit. Being allowed to operate as such though prevents the monies they raise from being taxed and therefore more of it goes to provide services and opportunities to developing young people not only athletically, but socially and morally which makes them better citizens. And they in turn, will hopefully become involved as adults to mentor children.
A few of the organizations I involved myself in with my four children are easily recognized. The Boy Scouts of America, The Girl Scouts of America, and Little League Baseball. Lesser known nonprofit groups we were involved with were Lorton-Gunston Basketball League, Burke Basketball, and Lee District Basketball and Baseball. We have so many good memories from these experiences. I am not one to volunteer! However, I coached most of their baseball and basketball teams. I was my daughter’s Daisy leader and my son’s Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. I look back on these memories and did not consider it volunteering for a nonprofit at the time. I was just trying to be involved in my children’s lives. Who knew I would be able to use the experience as a blog writing requirement as a 53 year old college student. Go figure!
